Attending with grace.
If you're unsure how to act or what to say, you're not alone. Here is some gentle guidance for attending a service or visitation.
Offering condolences
Offer your condolences to the family and, if you wish, share a positive memory of their loved one. Avoid minimizing the loss with statements like "it's probably for the best." A simple, heartfelt "I'm so sorry" is always appropriate.
What to wear
Choose dark and subdued colors such as dark blues, grays, browns, and black, and dress conservatively. Men should wear a jacket and tie; women should choose a dress or suit.
Timing and conduct
Arrive on time and enter quietly. During visitations, be mindful of others waiting and keep the line moving so the family can greet everyone. Smart phones should be turned off or silenced completely during the service.
Children and meaningful gestures
Encouraging children to take part can help them say goodbye. Thoughtful gestures, such as bringing food for the family, helping with errands, pet care, or household tasks, offer meaningful support during a demanding time.
