The United States burial flag.
The VA furnishes a burial flag to drape the casket or accompany the urn of an eligible veteran, honoring their memory and military service.
Who is eligible
- Veterans who served during wartime
- Those who died on active duty after May 27, 1941
- Veterans who served after January 31, 1955
- A peacetime veteran discharged or released before June 27, 1950
- Certain Philippine military service members (from April 25, 1951 onward)
- Former members of the Selected Reserves
Who receives the flag
Generally, the flag is given to the next of kin as a keepsake after the funeral service. When there is no next of kin, the VA will furnish the flag to a friend who requests it.
How to apply
Complete VA Form 27-2008, Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes. Flags are available at VA regional offices and most U.S. Post Offices, and your funeral director can typically obtain one for you.
Important to know
The law allows only one flag per veteran's funeral, and it cannot be replaced if lost, destroyed, or stolen (though veterans' organizations may be able to help). Because it is made of cotton, the burial flag is not suitable for outdoor display. For questions, call the VA toll-free at 1-800-827-1000.
